Week 2: Transmit Signal

On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell sent the very first telephone message. On such a historical moment as this you might assume he had some big speech prepared. He could have gone on about how his invention would revolutionize the world; how one day you would be able to instantly keep in touch with loved ones around the globe and hear them as if they were right next to you. He could have gone on and thanked all the little people who made this moment possible. What Bell really said that day over his new invention was this: "Watson, come here. I want you." Not exactly the most profound statement ever made, but that wasn't the point. The profoundness of the message wasn't what was said but rather that it was said.

One of the most often heard comments from people as they first start praying is "But, I don't know what to say." The thing is, it doesn't really matter what you say. God just wants to talk with you; to spend time with you. The key to any good relationship is communication. Ask any married couple what happens when their communication breaks down. It's not pretty, and usually ends with somebody sleeping on the couch.

Matthew 6:5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray
standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the
truth, they have received their reward in full.
[6] But when you pray, go into your room,
close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what
is done in secret, will reward you.
[7] And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like
pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
[8] Do not be like
them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

There is so magic password that allows you to talk to God. You don't go "Open Sesame" and then are suddenly able to come into His presence. No amount of Thee's, Thou's and Art's will make your prayer any more effective. It is your heart that He hears. All you have to do is call out to Him in faith. As a matter of fact, He's been keeping an ear out waiting to hear from you anyway. You see, you are His beloved child and He wants nothing more than to spend time with you.

"You can read all the manuals on prayer and listen to other people pray, but until you begin to pray yourself you will never understand prayer. It's like riding a bicycle or swimming: You learn by doing." -  Luis Palau

Assignment:

Talk to God throughout this week. Spend some time alone in a quiet place with Him, but also talk to Him in the midst of whatever you're doing this week. It could even be something as simple as a "Hi God, just wanted to check in and let you know I was thinking about you."
