Week 4: Frequency
Right now, as you sit and read this you are being bombarded by hundreds, maybe even thousands of voices clanging in your ears. Mixed with that is a confusing array of a million instruments, noises, sound effects and jingles. On top of that, your eyes are being exposed to more images than you could ever hope to process. It's enough to drive a person mad. It probably would drive you mad if you could actually hear or see it all. At any given time there are signals flooding in to the room around you. All of them carry some sort of message to be delivered, however, you will not be able to receive any of them until you tune in to their frequency. You decide which of the many voices you want to listen to simply by changing the station.
Isaiah 30:21 "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’"
God will speak to his children in any number of ways when we listen. First and foremost, He speaks through His Word, the Bible. "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ." (Romans 10:17) He will also speak to us through other people. He may use pastors, friends or even circumstances, but always in harmony with He has already said in His Word. Be careful of even the most well-meaning counsel if it doesn't line up with the Bible. "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." (Proverbs 16:25) Again, You decide what voice you will listen to. Make sure it is the one you can trust.
Matthew 6:7 "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words."
In biblical times, the pagans would pray, chanting a long string of their gods' names hoping that one of the would be able to help them. It's kind of like locking your radio tuner on seek with a busted antenna. It doesn't matter how many times you go around the dial, you're still not going to pick anything up. You have to know who you are talking to. There is only One who is as close as the mention of His Name; only One who can hear you wherever you are; who will never leave you or forsake you. His Name is Jesus Christ.
Assignment:
Take time frequently this week to "tune in" to God's word. Set aside time daily to read a chapter from the Bible, starting with the book of John.
